After thirty-three years as treasurer,
Leslie Wallace announced at the March meeting that he was stepping down from the position. Having joined the club in 1972, he was elected treasurer at the beginning of the 1977-78 year, taking over from Joe Fahey, who held the position from 1974-1977. Joe became President the same year and Gordon Capstick was in his third year as Secretary. Since then Leslie has put twenty-nine Presidents in all through his hands – the discrepancy is due to the fact that Dan Dillon served twice in 1984 and 1994, and Richard Long, John Geehan and Willie Fahey completed two-year tenures.
For the record I think it is only fitting to record the Presidents in the order in which they served:
Joe Fahey, Gordon Capstick, Pat Donohue, Michael McInerney, Pat Cronin, Martin Maher, Martin Pattwell, Dan Dillon, Eamonn Carew, Paul Murphy, Seamus King, Dan Grogan, John Breen, Eamonn Grogan, Michael O'Brien, Tom O'Donnell, Willie Kennedy, Dan Dillon, Tom O'Reilly, Tom Horan, Paddy Downey, Richard Long, Richard Long, Peter Silke, John Geehan, John Geehan, Marie Gayson, Willie Fahey, Willie Fahey, Joan Skeffington, Catherine McLoughlin, Richard O'Brien, Ned O'Toole.
Leslie has been a fixture at the top table during all these years, always cool and imperturbable and, as well, most co-operative and helpful when you called to see him at the garage. He participated in many Lions events over the years and has promised to continue serving from the backbenches in the future. Congratulations, Leslie, on your many years of service and we look forward to celebrating your forty years a Lion in 2012.
New Treasurer: Congratulations to Patricia Quirke on taking over the position in succession to Leslie. It is co-incidental that Leslie introduced her to the Lions and that she works at Cashel Motor Works. I understand that other congratulations are also due to Patricia! As well as being elected treasurer, she was also elected to the position of First Vice-President.
